Beethoven
In a season-finale tradition, EMCO combines with the acclaimed vocal ensemble, Cantiamo!, conducted by Cheryl Anderson, to present two of Beethoven’s greatest masterpieces.
For its season finale, the Ensemble Monterey Chamber Orchestra combines with the much acclaimed vocal ensemble, Cantiamo, to present one of Beethoven’s monumental masterpieces, the Mass in C. Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy II, Haydn’s last employer, commissioned this work in 1807. It was to be premiered on the nameday of the Prince’s wife, a very special annual celebration for which the great master Haydn had previously written no less than six masses. Now Beethoven was to be compared to his teacher, the great Haydn, who was still alive. Would he measure up? The result is one of the great cornerstones of the choral and orchestral repertoire. Not commonly performed because of its 50-minute length, Beethoven’s Mass in C will be presented in its entirety along with the master’s much-loved overture, Coriolanus.
