A performance by a clarinetist Brahms described as “absolutely the best” ended a yearlong hiatus and inspired him to write this piece which perfectly suits the instrument. The mood of the masterful Quintet is expressive and autumnal with a hint of bittersweet nostalgia. Tchaikovsky reminisces about Italy and his homeland in his Sextet. Working in what he called an “absolutely unusual form,” he demonstrates his contrapuntal mastery and ultimately creates a rich orchestral sound.
