Ensemble Monterey Chamber Orchestra

From Our Audience – March 2009

Trio for Flute, Violin and Viola Op. 25 by Beethoven.

Hello John,
For 24 hours I’ve been thinking about that wonderful, wonderful Beethoven trio that Ensemble Monterey played last evening.  The “conversations” between the strings and the flute—and between the violin and viola—were extraordinary.  I don’t recall ever hearing anything of that sort done as well.  I realize Beethoven had something to do with that, but the skill and artistry of the musicians and your direction brought it all alive.  It was gorgeous and fascinating.

You and Cheryl continue to amaze us with your creativity and dedication.  Please pass along our appreciation to the musicians; their performance was truly wondrous last night.

All best, Maureen Girard

Ensemble Monterey presents The Triumph of the Spirit on May 8th and 9th.

Ensemble Monterey Chamber Orchestra combines with the acclaimed vocal ensemble, Cantiamo!, to present its Season Finale, The Triumph of the Spirit. Performances are on Friday, May 8th, at the First Congregational Church in Santa Cruz, and Saturday, May 9th, at the Golden State Theatre in Monterey. Featured works include Beethoven’s Second Symphony and his great Choral Fantasy, the predecessor to the Ninth Symphony. Pianist Malia Roberson makes a triumphal return to the Central Coast as a soloist in this inspiring work. Concertmaster David Dally solos in a Violin Concerto by Joseph Boulogne, Chevaller de Saint-Georges. Often called “Le Mozart Noir,” Saint-Georges, born a slave, became one of the greatest composers, violinists, conductors and swordsmen in eighteenth-century France. Cantiamo! conductor, Cheryl Anderson, also presents works by Bach and Mendelssohn.

Both concerts are at 8 PM and are preceded by "Insights from the
Conductor" at 7 PM. John Anderson will be providing a brief history of the
life and times of the composers featured in the concert. Tickets are $25 General Admission and $20 Seniors/Students.
