Ensemble Monterey Chamber Orchestra

Opens 2009–2010 Season with Three’s Great Company!

Returning to the Golden State Theatre in Monterey and the First Congregational Church in Santa Cruz, Ensemble Monterey Chamber Orchestra opened its nineteenth season with a concert of intimate trios called Three’s Great Company! on the weekend of November 14th and 15th. The concert featured five trios, each of a distinctively different mood and style: Claude Debussy’s lovely Sonata  for Flute, Viola, and Harp; the French holiday piece Pastorales de Noël  for Bassoon, Viola and Harp by Andre Jolivet; Randall Thompson’s Suite for Oboe, Clarinet, and Viola; a jazz-inspired trio Suite for Oboe, Clarinet and Bassoon by American composer Alec Wilder; and the haunting And Then I Knew ’twas Wind,  for Flute, Viola and Harp by Japan’s Toro Takemitsu.

Next Concert

Be sure to mark your calendar for the remainder of the season! Our next concert, B&B Retreat, contrasts the charm of Boccherini’s famous Quintet in E Major with the profound depth of Brahms’s Sextet, Op. 36. Concerts are at 8 p.m. on Friday, February 5, 2010, at the First Congregational Church in Santa Cruz and at 8 p.m. on Saturday, February 6, 2010, at the Golden State Theatre in Monterey. Both concerts will be preceded by Dr. John Anderson’s “Insights from the Conductor,” one hour prior to the concert. These insights enlighten and illuminate, providing audience members with stories that are sure to enhance the concert-goer’s experience. Bring a friend!

asdf Wine, Women & Song

Our Fourth Annual fundraiser, Wine, Women, and Song, A Parisian Affair! was held on September 27th at the Seascape Golf Club. Back by popular demand, Stephen Tosh and The Divas entertained us, and Dinah Phillips once again returned as our auctioneer. Both the Silent and LIVE auctions were a hit, and in spite of fire alarms sounding, we successfully raised the targeted goal we needed in order to continue bringing our Monterey and Santa Cruz audiences enlightening musical performances. Thank you for a great time!

Wine, Women & Song was sponsored by:

Birdies for Charity

Birdies for Charity is a fun way to make a charitable donation to the nonprofit organization of your choice—Ensemble Monterey! Your pledge amount will be based on the number of combined birdies scored by PGA tour players during official tournament play at the 2010 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-am Golf Tournament, February 11–14, 2010. You may pledge as little as a penny (or as much as you like) per birdie that is scored during the tournament, or if you prefer, you may pledge a flat dollar amount. Each person who makes a pledge to Birdies for Charity also has the opportunity to guess the exact number of birdies that will be scored during the tournament. One lucky person who guesses correctly (or comes closest without going over) will win the Grand Prize of two Continental Airline tickets (value up to $500 each). Other great prizes will be awarded through random drawings that will occur weekly. So get your pledges in to us soon to have an opportunity to win one of the great weekly prizes! They include a one-night stay at The Inn at Spanish Bay and a round of golf for two at The Links at Spanish Bay, FC Gold Pride soccer jersey autographed by Brandi Chastain, Waterford crystal, autographed golf memorabilia, and more.

Monterey Peninsula Foundation will invoice you in March for the amount you pledged and will provide a 10% match. This means Ensemble Monterey Chamber Orchestra will actually receive 110% of all funds donated to us! Click here to make your pledge: https://birdies.attpbgolf.com/charities/ensemblemonterey. Because total birdie guesses cannot be submitted online, please email your guesses to Ensemble Monterey Chamber Orchestra at info@ensemblemonterey.org. Submissions must be received no later than February 10, 2010.
