Although Beethoven's Second Symphony reflects his recognition of his deafness in its tragic overtones, its overall effect is bright and positive, demonstrating his determination to triumph. That triumph was already apparent to a contemporary critic, who declared this symphony would "remain as the work of a fiery spirit ... when a thousand fashionable pieces now celebrated will have long been consigned to their graves." Framed by two significant works of Beethoven is a Concerto by a remarkable individual. In addition to an active life as athlete, soldier and swordsman, Saint-Georges was a virtuoso violinist who wrote lyrical concerti that made great demands on the performer. We end our journey in our traditional season finale style performing with the acclaimed vocal ensemble Cantiamo! The Fantasia for Piano, Chorus and Orchestra, better known as the Choral Fantasy, highlights piano, orchestra, and chorus in a marvelously constructed piece that foreshadows the triumphant choral Ode to Joy from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.
